The caseload was over 100 to 1 for the local probation officer; the delinquency records were sealed but for research like I was doing; and my count of cases 'improved' was going very slowly. I was tired.
Then, I opened a file folder and 8X10's fell on the floor. I picked them up and read in the file of a boy of nine, currently monitored by the probation office. He had come home from school and gone to his room to play 'shoot em up.' His window opened on a vacant lot, and he first aimed at action figures & stuffed toys in the room. Pshew. Pshew, he said. Then he looked out the window. His playmate, a girl younger than he, was picking her way through the weeds towards his house. He would have a playmate for his game. As if in greeting, he leveled the weapon her direction. But he did not go "Pshew, Pshew" this time. He pulled the trigger.
I put the b/w photos back in the file and put it back in the drawer. My stomach had turned at the sight of a beautiful little girl missing 2/3rds of her cranium. The gun was his Dad's, not the plastic one he usually played with.
I learned the truth that day, that not only are such accidents common in gun country--and irreversably tragic--but they expose a phrase like "a sacred right to keep and bear arms," as an artifact of religion linked with violence, a condition where blood ends up even on the hands of children, and it won't come off.
