Middle America Stands Up to Executive Extremism in Iraq
Christian Science Monitor: January 26, 2007 "Antiwar activities began earlier this week. A coalition of student, labor, church, and veterans' groups visited the offices of 17 US senators the morning after Mr. Bush's State of the Union address to Congress. Veterans for Peace formed up for a political assault in Washington beginning Thursday and scheduled to include a "grass-roots congressional education day" when lawmakers return to work Monday. "The 109th Congress shirked their responsibility," says Michael McPearson, executive director of the veterans' group based in St. Louis. "The 110th Congress must stand up to the president. This is why they were elected."
LA Times: January 17, 2007 "A group of service members came to Capitol Hill on Tuesday armed with signatures from more than 1,000 military personnel who oppose the war. "We will not be silent while thousands die," said Sgt. Liam Madden, a 22-year-old active-duty Marine and Iraq war veteran who is helping lead the effort to organize resistance to the war from inside the military. Madden and other service members leading the campaign, which they are calling Appeal for Redress, urged Congress to stop the troop escalation and find a way to begin bringing forces home from Iraq."
MPFI (January 25th) is considering the following addition to Article I of the MT Resolution of Impeachment: "3 Had his Attorney General Alberto Gonzales fraudulently claim before congress, under oath, that for five years the President's sign-off on this warrantless spying was lawful, and" If you have word changes, or broader concerns about this inclusion, please contact us by email in a timely fashion. The oath was administered by Sen. Leahy and referred to by Gonzales himself in his testimony, though his mike was off until one minute into his testimony. A court decision upholds the unlawful nature of this Gonzales' assertion and the complainants have not dropped the case, nor has the judge vacated her order to end the program.
The Nation: Feb 12, 2007 Elizabeth Holtzman says, after noting that there were 75 pro-impeachment rallies in December 2006: "There is no remedy short of impeachment to protect us from this President, whose ability to cause damage in the next two years is enormous. If we do not act against Bush, we send a terrible message of impunity to him and to future Presidents and mark a clear path to despotism and tyranny. Succeeding generations of Americans will never forgive us for lacking the nerve to protect our democracy."
