Speaker Pelosi changed her mind. In 2007, MPFI was aware of over a million Americans demanding our US CEO's be fired but she would not permit free hand to the Judiciary Committee and she routed impeachment petitions by rule to her office. This put MPFI in protest mode, and when she directed Steny Hoyer last November to deprive the Cheney impeachment of debate, MPFI called for her to step down.
This no longer appears necessary, though she has only released the Judiciary chairman to hold hearings. So, MPFI moves into petition mode, and will petition and work with the Speaker to permit floor debate, then move impeachment Articles to the Senate. No new fax campaign is contemplated, we will simply continue faxing Judiciary Committee members to exercise their responsibility to establish the validity of the current 39 Articles of impeachment.
"Petitioning" the speaker here in Missoula this month, means we have a preference for orderly public events with constitution-based and bill of rights sinage, while celebrating her choice to honor her oath to the Constitution we have worked so hard to restore. One of our leaders, David Swanson, has just called for alignments of the impeachment movement with groups rallying for peace. We have supported this since early 2007 in multiple ways, while hoisting our legitimate demands that unethical and illegal acts by US CEO's be forestalled. Now, the official process to that end has begun for Montana Partners for Impeachment. We remain tolerant of those expressing angst with congress when deprived of their rights, including the right not to die in a fraudulent war or have communications seized without probable cause. Rebuilding our nation is a long cooperative road and that demands free speech.

Sam Donaldson, First Among Many in Corporate News Networks, Wakes Up To Negative Iraqi Feelings on US OccupationSomewhere between civics class and h.s. history class I learned the rationale of the US Constitution, as an active document containing 'shall' clauses activated by human actors who are centered in Enlightenment goals of, by, and for the whole people. Congressional oaths defend it from its enemies. It is active in public affairs.
Somewhere between reading Advise and Consent and watching real life politics from Everett Dirkson and Kennedy/Nixon TV debates onward, I learned there may be few Constitution-centered congresspersons. Instead, they may center on second-place agendas: the colleagueship of trading favors; advocating and defending interests for legislative agendas; being the expert on traditions of a congressional chamber; cultivating political careers or sidesteps into lobbying and corporate law; or self-centered accumulations of power, prestige, and wealth.
There is an ethical rationale for this; it is not just treason against their public mandate. So says the Utilitarian doctrine that by pursuing a special interest the good of a complex whole is built up. And this works when 'the greatest good for the greatest number' is the operative doctrine, with equal government access, and remaining conscious of the oath to defend the Constitution.
But the present government sought to subvert not only the means of Constitutional advice and consent, its balanced structures of power, but the very rule of law over persons. The number of Constitution-centered senators dropped to a handful, and representatives to a baker's dozen or so. Suddenly, voting majorities were available for vote compromises with enemies of the Constitution, with an operative doctrine of 'the greatest good for the apex of class, status, and party.' CEOs in industry, the military, government, religion, and commerce often wrote the legislation, profiteered in imperialist conflicts for their gain, then avoided prosecution through appointments, no-bid contracts and congressional votes designed to grant them license or immunity. This anti-constitutional agenda is part of postmodern fascism, and it does not work. It seduces secondary-priority congresspersons into subversive alliances, while first-priority constitutionalists rail against the night that has fallen on Washington.
I have learned the truth under the Bush Administration, that only activating one's oath to impeach can halt such dismantling of our Constitution. We must recognize what these persons are about, reject crafting messages to satisfy their motives, and move them out of governmental roles. At best they should be universally shamed as we return to the West's Enlightenment goals. Essentially, it is not that we need more idealists, but that we need fewer cynics organizing forays to scotch guarantees in our founding document. There is no tradeoff for liberty. B. Russell
